Designed in late 1944 as a joint project for the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army Air Services, the Mitsubishi J8M Shūshui was developed to intercept high-altitude B-29 Superfortress bombing raids over the Japanese home islands.

Based directly on technical manuals for the German Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet brought to Japan via submarine (Yanagi mission), Mitsubishi reverse-engineered the tailless design using local materials and the Toku-Ro.2 (KR10) rocket engine. The aircraft made its historic first powered flight on July 7, 1945, making it one of Japan's most technologically advanced experimental fighters of WWII.
