  • The 1st Light Cavalry Lancers Regiment of the Imperial Guard, often called the Polish Lancers, was formed in 1807 by decree of Napoleon himself. Composed largely of Polish nobles and landowners, they were attached to Napoleon’s Imperial Guard and quickly earned a reputation for bravery — most famously at the Battle of Somosierra, where they charged uphill through Spanish artillery to clear the pass for Napoleon2.

    Campaign Uniform
In the field, practicality met elegance. Their campaign uniform typically included:

    • A blue kurtka (short-tailed jacket) with crimson facings (lapels, cuffs, and turnbacks).

    • Stovepipe trousers in blue or crimson, often reinforced with leather for riding.

    • The iconic czapka — a four-cornered Polish lancer cap — usually covered in black oilskin during campaigns to protect it from the elements.

    • A taupe or tan greatcoat with red collar and cape lining for cold weather, especially during the Russian campaign

They carried lances (introduced in 1809), sabers, pistols, and carbines — the latter often attached to the saddle rather than worn on a belt.
