Designed by Mario Castoldi, the Macchi C.202 Folgore entered service in 1941 to address the performance shortcomings of radial-engined Italian fighters. By pairing the streamlined airframe of the earlier C.200 Saetta with a license-built German Daimler-Benz DB 601A inline engine (Alfa Romeo RA.1000 Monsone), Macchi created a highly agile interceptor. Praised for its exceptional dogfighting capabilities and speed, the Folgore saw extensive action in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and over Malta.
