Originally designed in the 1980s by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union, the Antonov An-225 Mriya ("Dream") was built specifically to transport the Buran Space Shuttle and its associated rocket boosters for the Soviet space program.

Powered by six massive turbofan engines and featuring a distinctive twin-tail fin design to clear aerodynamic wake from dorsal cargo, the An-225 stood as the heaviest aircraft ever built and held the world record for the largest wingspan of any operational aircraft.

Following the cancellation of the Buran program, the single operational An-225 was reconditioned for commercial service with Antonov Airlines, transporting super-heavy and oversized cargo globally until its tragic destruction in February 2022.
