Designed by Boulton Paul Aircraft, the Defiant entered RAF service in 1939 with a unique concept: all offensive armament was concentrated in a power-operated dorsal turret, leaving the pilot with no forward-firing guns. While vulnerable in daytime dogfights against agile single-seat fighters like the Bf 109, the Defiant found its true calling during the Blitz as a dedicated night fighter (NF).
